I won't speak for sysadmins, but personally, the
uptime thrill is leftover from my time with Windows. 
Going from an OS that really couldn't last more that a
few days without a reboot, to one that could go for
months was just pretty cool.  

Besides, it's something neat, and easy to brag about ;-)
