Jerry,
Thanks for the note. I've traded email with several people, and
you're right: the consensus is that a 386 would be adequate for
simple text editing, but hard to load. Everyone agrees the 40 MB HD
would be tight - although one person graciously offered to send me an
earlier version of the Slackware CD that is optimized for the older
machine.
Although I'd like to upgrade my sister to a Pentium, even a new low
end machine is out of her budget. She's been running her
hairdressing sideline with an Epson 8088 for years, and every time
she saves enough for a "real" computer, one of her kids grows out of
his shoes at the same time the car breaks down and the drain clogs
again. Frankly, she was recently interviewed by a network TV show
that did a story on suburban food banks, so you see why I have to
think outside the box on this one.
I may be able to swing a used machine, if the incidentals don't kill
it: I'll cc: the list, and see if the members have any old boards/
floppies/cases/whatever they're willing to trade for. If anyone is
cleaning out their closet, give me a ring.
Thanks for your help.

Ok. Lots of good suggestions. There are Linux systems that run from
diskette. You can upgrade the 386 system for a couple of hundred $$,
but
you can get brand new low end Pentium systems for under $500. I think
you need to get together with your sister and look around for
something.
I think the concensus is that you can use the 386 system, but getting
Linux onto the system will be a challenge.
