Microsoft Bus Mouse

console support for the mouse also requires "gpm".  Try this:

  	$ ps ax|grep gp
  	  134  ?  S    0:00 /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/psaux -t ps2

I believe gpm disables itself while X is running.
