Just to summarize.

PQ's Partition Magic w/ it's Boot Magic is made just for this type
of thing.

xx-DOS needs to be within the first two gigs of the drive, and may
work on the second drive.  On a primary partition.

WIN98 needs to be on the first drive. On a primary partition.  Within
the the first 8 gigs (but I didn't fool with Large drive settings).

PM indicates that linux can be put in logical partitions on the
first drive with the usual caveat regarding 1024 cylinders.

I ended up using bootmagic as the loader, it sets various partitions
as "hidden" depending upon the OS loaded.  I haven't yet looked to 
see what "hidden" means..
