Netcom has a very unusual practice of requiring that your user name be prefixed
with a "#" character when logging in using PPP. This is a holdover from their
proprietary Netcruiser software, which used CSLIP. In other words, logging in
as user "angus49" will get you CSLIP, so you must log in as user "#angus49" to
get standard PPP.
I don't know anything about your particular modem, either, so make sure it is
not a "winmodem" that only works under Windows.
