On the downside of scheduling more than 1 speaker for a single night is that
one of the speakers may have a real interesting topic, and the other speaker
may be upstaged, or the first speaker will take too long, and the second won't
have the time, and you end up getting someone upset. Another way is to have a
couple of backup speakers. This worked out nicely when Rob filled in a few
meetings ago. Several of your regular attendees may have something
interesting, or you can plan, as a backup, several demos. What you need to
plan is the scenario where your speaker just does not show up. All groups have
had this happen. We had several cases with the Atari group where we had
actually confirmed with the speaker late in the afternoon of the meeting day,
but the speaker never appeared. (Thom Graziano did this to us twice). So, if
you always have something prepared, and the speaker never shows, then you
don't have to do a dance.
--- That is why I am no longer a group director. You end up being the speaker
of last resort.
